How to shoot sunrise photography?

I can shoot HDR sunrise but I don't want HDR on these shots I'm about to take. I have a nikon d3100 and will be shooting landscape/ lake type area. I want the water soft exposed and have the trees still be lit up a bit and have the sunrise and clouds in perfect color without being blown out! Please anything helps! I need the settings and more.

Unless one of us was standing right there beside you any suggestions of what "settings" to use for your sunrise are nothing but guesses.

Personally, I shoot about 99% of the time in Aperture Priority. I also shoot a lot of backlit scenes.

All made with my camera on my tripod and using Aperture Priority. 100% of the landscapes pictures I make are made with my camera on my tripod.

So instead of expecting someone on here to magically know what "settings" to use under whatever conditions you may encounter learn to use and trust your camera's light meter.
