How to photograph a black cardboard?
I have a black cardboard with white text (logo) on it.
I would like to fill the frame with the cardboard. Is there a way to obtain the background as pure black and the text on the cardboard to be white?
I have a grey card. How do I need to take the meter reading? I would be grateful for any help! I'm using a Nikon D3100.
Meter off of the black card and reduce the exposure by 2 stops. Viola. The Zone System.
Meter off of the grey card and use those settings, see how it looks. You may want to stop down. Clean it up in photoshop.
Do not overexpose, as suggested above. That will merely turn the black card grey.
I'm not familiar with you camera, so this is a generic solution that will work for most cameras.
First, setup the camera to take a picture of the gray card. Allow the camera to choose the settings (ISO, shutter, and aperature). Then set the camera to manual mode and set it to the same settings before taking the picture.
Another way that is less scientific is to use the camera's settings but underexpose the image by a few stops.
Finally, if you are only interested in pure white text on a pure black background, you can take the picture normally and boost the contrast as much as possible in an editing program.
