How to get better sound and video NIkon D5000?

I have a Nikon D5000 and 18-55mm 3.5-5.6
I want to make short films and the video quality as I've seen so far on my camera is ok but the sound is horrible and I might get a Zoom H1 for better sound. If you know the Zoom H1 you can mount it like a shotgun mic right? The D5000 doesn't have a external mic jack but I can record audio with the H1 and sync it (I know how to do that). What lens should I use is another question. I've heard the 50mm f1.8D is good. I know you need a lens of an aperture of at least that to shoot good videos because most camcorders's max aperture is 1.8. I've never used a prime lens before. It has a fixed focal length of 50 so would it be like the same zoom when I set my 18-55mm to 50? I tried that out and it looks so zoomed in like how you suppose to film someone it looks like you have to have the camera very far away.

Shooting video or anything else in low light is always iffy. The production companies who shoot video and motion picture always light their sets with very bright lighting. You two will have to add a lot of light in order to get good image quality

Most production companies also record sound separately from what the camera picks up because an external sound recording can be much, much better and it is later synced with the video or motion picture. There are professional sound people whose whole job is to record and later work with the film or video editor to sync the recorded sound

All of that is true but you won't be making "film" with a digital camera unless you can afford the expensive conversion process and have a studio that can do that. Otherwise, if you're going to work in this stuff at least get your terms in order.

Yes you're correct about the 50. Since you've done it with your 18-55 (I have the Canon version) you now know what it would be like to shoot with that lens all the time… Zoomed that's correct.

My advice also would be to light and shoot with what you have. Unless you can afford another
$400 - to - $1, 000 for a good lens go with what you have.

However, if you want to do it right, as David mentioned, you're going to need lighting gear.

Also, since you know how to loop audio that's a plus for you.
