How to carry a dslr around in NY?
So i'm going on a school trip to New york and i have a nikon D3000 and want to bring it. We'll have backpacks so i can't use a case and some nights like when we go to broadway we won't have our backpacks just purses. (i want to get a picture of the broadway sign and other surprise photo-ops) i was also considering buying the Fujifilm FinePix
( F500EXR http://www.amazon.com/...004HO58KM/ )
what should i do?
Added (1). Fujifilm finepix f500 apparently it has lots of noise… True?
In a strap around your neck.
Use your strap.
I have a back pack with my camera gear but I also have a smaller bag to carry my camera, Flash and a extra battier when I don't need the full setup. It's easy to hold or but the strap over your neck. Put it under the table if you go to eat. Get a bag without a name on it. Don't give them a reason to try to steal it.
Avoid anything that isn't a dSLR, compacts with large image sensors like a Sony NEX 5N or any of the micro four thirds excepted. Yes the fuji and all the other compacts, and megazooms regardless of brand will deliver photos with tons of noise and grain in low light.
The camera strap isn't the best idea either. I use a black rapid strap, not the double but for a single camera. I have a double strap made by another maker. With a small kit lens or prime lens, it's great for keeping a camera with you, and yet easy to grab and take shots with. Bags are great for protection, but slow you down, and can be a hassle when it comes time to get your camera out.
Also, the standard camera strap can slide off your shoulder if you carry it that way. Across the chest is more secure, but those straps aren't really designed for that kind of carry. A bag might come in handy in places where dSLRs and large-ish cameras might be banned though.
Black rapid has introduced new models, including one aimed at women and their unique body shape, look around and check them out.

Wide camera strap is the most comfortable. DO NOT carry any camera by it's strap in your hands. Somebody walks into you and you drop the camera! With digitals that becomes the time to buy a new camera!
Porter's camera is a good place to get wide camera straps
