Cameras as Carry-ons?
I'm going to Florida this January and as a huge plane fanatic I was planning on bringing my Camera (Nikon D50 dSLR) onto the plane with me and I was wondering if this is still allowed, also I was wondering what's the deal with those X-Ray machines (forgive me if they don't use these, I've only flown once and that was like when I was 8), is it safe to put your camera through whatever security scanning devices they use? If anything bad happens to my camera can I sue?
Nothing will happen to your camera but you may want to take the memory card out and place it with your personal belongings - wallet, keys, that kind of stuff so it doesn't go through the scanner. I've not heard of a scanner corrupting photo data but you can't be too safe. If you have more than one card, put them in a memory card zipper case and put that in the basket with keys, etc.
I've taken plenty of photos out the window while flying. Scanners will not damage your camera. I've heard of memory cards getting corrupted but it has never happen to me.
I took my Nikon 40DX on a trip this summer and had no problems at all. The following is from the Travel Security Administration website -
Photographic Equipment & Film Transporting Film and Photographic Equipment
Photographic Equipment You may carry one (1) bag of photographic equipment in addition to one (1) carry-on and one (1) personal item through the screening checkpoint. The additional bag must conform to your air carrier's carry-on restrictions for size and weight. Please confirm your air carrier's restrictions prior to arriving at the airport.
Air carriers may or may not allow the additional carry-on item on their aircraft. Please check with your air carrier prior to arriving at the airport.
Our screening equipment will not affect digital cameras and electronic image storage cards.
Film The equipment used to screen checked baggage will damage undeveloped film. Pack your undeveloped film in your carry-on bag. High speed and specialty film should be hand inspected at the security checkpoint. To facilitate hand-inspection, remove your undeveloped film from the canister and pack in a clear plastic bag.

Hope this helps and have a great vacation.
Shouldn't be a problem & the Xrays won't be a problem. Go for ut.
The X-ray machines will not affect your digital SLR. Have fun on your trip and don't worry about the camera. It'll be fine.
You shouldn't have any trouble carrying your camera on board. For sure you don't want to put it in your checked luggage! They are used to seeing electronics such as cameras and computers and dvd players and many other things going through the screen process at airports. When you get to the area, put your camera in one of the bins that they have there on the belt. It will go through the machine with no problem--it won't hurt the camera (unless you drop it getting it in or out of the bin!). You may have to open the bag, but not necessarily. It would be similar to a woman's purse and we don't have to open them. It all just goes through the screener.
The only time I had any kind of problem with electronics was when flying internationally and I had a "new fangled" voltage converter in my laptop bag. They just inspected it manually and all was well.
I've seen lots of photos from out plane windows on Flickr, so I'm sure lots of people use their cameras on the plane. I usually use my plane ride home to go through my photos and start editing them on my laptop.
Have fun in Florida, and take lots of photos!
It's pretty educational and entertaining, but skip to 5:45 into the video, it'll tell you what to do and how to get it on the plane. 6:50 is helpful when it comes to security and checking packages - very important.
You won't have any problems with your camera as a carry on. In fact, that's the only way to take it. Never put it in your checked bag. I carried a D50 and now a D80 on the plane all the time. A bag that will hold the camera and accessories will fit under the seat so you can take it as a "personal item" and still take a regular carry on bag too. The only thing they hassle you about is video cameras for some reason. Video cameras and laptop computers have to be taken out of the bag and run through the scanner separately.
No problem going through the X-Ray machine either. That might hurt film but it won't faze digital, even with the memory card in it.
