How to attach a cheap mic to Nikon D3200 and set it up?

I have a mic that comes from a set of skull candy headphones and it's suprisingly good quality, I make videos for people and when I interview people I would like to use this mic until I get a new one. When I went to plug it in and tried recording the mic was not picking up any sound. I need to know if it's my mic or there's a way to set it up because I have looked through the movie settings.

Buy Nikon Original Mic.

You can adjust the sensitivity of the mic. See page 90 of your manual.
