How good is the Nikon D3100?
How good is the Nikon D3100?
It was an excellent entry level camera and then it was updated with the release of the D3200. The D3200 is so good that it is defiantly worth saving your extra pennies to by it instead
Its a great camera. Its still being made. It will probably remain in Nikon's lineup for another year or so. The only bad thing I can think of with the D3100 is its monitor. While its nice and big its resolution is a little low for its size. The D3200 and D5100 have much high resolution monitors. If i was you I'd really look into the D5100 since its come down in price allot. Or if you want the new D3200 is also a great option.
It is an excellent entry-level DSLR. Although it has been replaced by the D3200, it is still a capable camera.
It is hard to know if the actual production of this camera has ceased or not as it typically takes months for sales to deplete warehouse stock; especially given many people will tend to buy the D3200.
One way to know is when the camera goes on discount - and given the D3100 has, it is likely down to remaining dealer/warehouse stock.
At any rate, the difference between the D3100 and D3200 is not significant, and you will not likely notice much of a performance difference between the two.
Very…
Its an acceptable entry-level DSLR - BUT only the more expensive Nikon AF-S lenses will auto focus on it. Of course this is equally true of the D3200, D5100, D5200 as well.
For about $200.00 more you could buy the Pentax K-30 which has a weather-sealed body and lens. You'd have to move up to the Nikon D7000 to get that valuable feature. Note that weather-sealed doesn't mean waterproof. You can't take the K-30 swimming but its great in a light rain or in dusty conditions.

Today, it's still a top-dollar entry-level camera. Although new models have replaced it such as the Nikon D3200 and the Nikon D5100, it's still a very good piece of machinery. Last year, it was named one of the six best entry-level D-SLR's by B&H Photo.
Remember, it's not the camera that makes a good photo, it's the photographer.
The Nikon D3100 is regarded as the best-featured entry-level DSLR and will appeal equally to beginners along with enthusiasts on a tighter budget.
It features a high-resolution 14-megapixel CMOS DX sensor, high-quality 3x NIKKOR 18-55mm VR image stabilization zoom lens and intuitive onboard assistance including the learn-as-you grow Guide Mode. Capture beautiful pictures and amazing Full HD 1080p movies with sound and full-time autofocus. Easily capture the action other cameras miss with a fast start up time, split-second shutter release, 3 frames per second shooting and 11-point autofocus.
I recommend this camera for people who are looking for an affordable, user-friendly DSLR. It is lightweight; feature packed and comes with a lens kit.
Best.
