How does the Nikon D40 compare with other cameras?
One of the worse DSLR cameras ever made, poor build, very limited functions (as most Nikon entry level cameras are) and, even at the time they were released, old technology, expensive to add auto focus lenses to, even more expensive if you want image stabilisation. The only advantage is they were cheap. Down to a price, not up to a quality.
An old D90 would be a much better bet. Or any Pentax which is, even now, the most cost effective high image quality system to buy into.
The Nikon D40 was discontinued a few years ago. Its modern counterpart is the D3100.
In my opinion you should remove the Nikon blinders and look at Sony and Pentax.
I seem to be in the same boat as you, therefore my advice maybe no help, but i have heard great things about this particular camera and am looking forward to getting one soon.
If you are a relitive amateur then apparently it is very easy to use and takes great photos. The only other alternative would be the Canon EOS 400D, which is a little more expensive but is as good.
One of these 2 is probably your best bet if you don't want to spend alot. However i'm sure you would be happy with both. The best thing is to go into a shop and pick them up and see how it feels in your hands. Its probably down to personal choice.
