I have been attempting HDR and the steps i have used consist of lots of steps. So was wondering if there was an easier route?

Look in the user manual that came with the camera.
If you haven't got it, then you can download one from the Nikon website.

Here's a video showing how:
Wow, am I glad I got a Canon - that is ridiculously complicated! I don't usually get into the Nikon V Canon debate at all, but seriously - that is truly awful usability.

Look on page 92, 93 and 94 of your user manual.
When you have taken the time to set up a shot with your camera on a tripod, bracketing manually should not be a big deal. Just adjust the camera shutter to provide yourself with one OE, NE and UE exposure. If you use the lenses aperture, you will get depth of field shifts

@B K:
I just took a look at various similar videos for Canon, and they aren't any more user friendly. Sure, they include a nice graphical display showing the bracketing instead of numbers, but they require the user to go through menus. Which one is better is quite up to personal preference. I like it on my D90 that setting up a three exposure bracketing of my preferred interval takes just a single thumb dial click to the right, while holding the BKT button.
With two variables to be controlled (interval size and bracketing pattern), using one dial to control each of them while having designated them to control bracketing by holding a special button is pretty much the most efficient way to do so - just like it's done for aperture and shutter speed.

I think this will help you learn how to do it: http://www.kenrockwell.com/...om-bkt.htm
