I have a Nikon D3000. And I want to get better at portrait shots. Can someone explain to me how to get the settings right for them? Do you need a special lens other then the regular 18-55mm? If so what kind ( That's affordable?) Thanks!

Well, the ones I looked at are shot in the shade or on an over cast day for the soft light. Tripod always helps, setting the ISO at 200 and go do the photos.

What is it about those images that you are referring to? I don't see anything special about them.

If that's the only lens you have your portrait shots are never going to be all that good. For portrait work a 100 or 105mm lens is king.

There are lots of excellent sites on the www that can help you make high quality photos… Only a Google search away.

Practice, practice practice.

It mostly depends on the ISO/Fstop/Shutter formula OR edit it to look that way.

if it's not the "color" that you're talkin about but the DOF then just change the fstop to a lower number, you never really mentioned the fstop of your 18-55mm lens… But try buyin a telephoto lens a 200-700mm F/1.4 or something similar to it would help. What i have is a promaster 200-700mm F/1.4 ($150) and i also shoot with a d3000.

I suggest you get a 50mm nikkor lens. Which is about 100 dollars.
Good bokeh, but it's just that it's a stationary type of lens. You can't change the focal length.
Which results you to walking more. But it's worth it.
Also, stay at the lowest f stop as possible.

You can very much achieve similar results with 18-55. Learn some basic photoshop or lightroom skills and with a little bit of retouching you can achieve similar results! If you noticed the photographer might have applied some washed out/dull color preset to most of those photos. Photographs that you see in many photographers portfolios nowadays, are almost always post-processed in some sort of image manipulation software!
