How to turn the bulb setting off on my Nikon D40 camera?

I have a Nikon D40 camera and I don't know how this happened, but when I try to change the shutter speed it goes to 30 and then 'bulb'. Its incredibly frustrating as I'm not able to take pictures on the manual setting unless its during the day time or the flash is on. I have tried re-setting the camera but this doesn't seem to have an effect. Any help would be appreciated!

Perhaps if you'd bother to check the owner's manual you'd learn. If you don't have one a pdf version can be downloaded from Nikon.

If you look on page 43 of your user manual, you will see that when you move the shutter speed from 30 seconds one direction you are on bub. Move it the other direction a full stop and you will be on 15 seconds. The next full stop, 8 seconds, etc.

Turn the wheel the other way around. That's 30" for 30 seconds.

Read you manual - it tells you how to turn the wheel to adjust shutter speed in manual.

Just turn it until you get the shutter speed you want;

bulb --> 30" (sec) --> 15" --> 8" ---> 4" --- etc etc etc until you are into tenths/hundredths of a sec (eg 1/125)
