You NEED a manual

See page 52. This flashing highlight feature is to show you that you are overexposing the highlights of the image. You can cycle through the display options to turn this feature off

Blur is caused by hand holding a camera with shutter speeds too slow to prevent the movement of the camera or subject from causing blur. To assure that your images are not blurry, shoot at shutter speeds of at least 1/250th second until you can master holding the camera very still.

Look on page 16 to see how to properly hold the camera

The highlight mode is your friend. If you have too much area flashing, this means you need to adjust your exposure. Learn to use exposure compensation which is explained on page 47 in your manual (be sure to read the whole page). The D40 has a tendency to overexpose images. Exposure compensation setting of -0.7 works well for many shots.

Use the 4-way selector button on the back of your camera. Press the up or down arrow to change view modes.
