How to take sunset pictures with a dslr?

I have a Nikon D3100. I want to take pictures of the beautiful sunset, but I can never seem to get the setting right. What settings do I need to set my camera to to get the picture?

Take your meter reading of the sky WITHOUT the sun in the frame. Lock the exposure, recompose, and shoot.

You need to learn how to control exposure in manual mode. I would recommend reading a book called "Understanding Exposure"
