I want to gift him a lens _ thinking of nikon 18_105 vr, nikon 70_300mm vr, or tamron 28_75/17_50. Please help me decide, which one or if you think two are needed then which two.

I'd say that since these two primes are pretty limited why not the 18-105. More versatile.

It depend on what he shoots. These above all are for difference purpose. 35mm and 50mm primes are another category. And I'm sure, he might be having 18-55mm too.

If he shoot outdoor much 70-300 is good for him. If he want to carry only one lense. 18-105 will be better.

So If he has 18-55mm, 35mm and 50mm, then you should consider telepoto zoom lens.i. E. 70-300 or 55-300mm VR or 55-200 VR

Unless he bought the D90 as a body only, the 18-105mm is the kit lens the D90 normally came with - not the 18-55mm. Only the entry-level Nikons come with 18-55mm; the advanced Nikons come with better lenses (if you buy the lens with the camera - which is optional for this camera).

Be sure he didn't buy it already when he got the D90.

If he is into prime lenses (both the 35mm and 50mm are primes), then lens quality is important to him - and that would especially leave the Tamron out (not the greatest quality), as well as the other zoom lenses.

Why not get him a Tokina 100mm macro? It is a great lens, and it would give him an excellent short length prime telephoto lens, as well as having macro.

Well if he is shooting wildlife (birds, animals… ) and portraits then 70-300mm will be good, but if he is not interested in that the 18-105 would be good it would be more versatile than those primes but don't buy any third party lens from tamaron or sigma. So if he would be shooting more birds and animals and wants a zoom then buy 70-300mm but if he wants to shoot landscape architecture or group photos or just a general photo then buy him 18-105

It's probably best to ask him. He might have lenses that you haven't seen, or he may have some ideas of what he is saving up for.

Only your son can tell what he truly needs. Ask him. It will be for the best.

I think better go for telephoto, 70 300mm vr will be better option!
