Glass on a 35mm lens for Nikon D5100?

My camera (Nikon D5100) was dropped and my 2 month old (35mm) lens had its glass break. I had a lens protector and it broke through both the protector and the lens glass itself. What should I do? I really don't have the money to buy a whole new lens.

You can attempt to get it fixed, which may end up costing the same amount as a new lens

dropping a camera or lens is usually a death sentence.were you using the supplied neckstrap? It is there for a reason.

Wow, that lens must have hit something sharp.

This is what happened to one of my lenses, but only the UV filter and lens hood was damaged, $90 to replace the UV filter and $15 for the lens hood.

You just were not lucky.

You will have to replace the lens and take better care of your camera and lenses in the future

Sorry, Tamara, but you only have two options - pay to have your broken lens repaired or buy a new lens. Since the lens hit hard enough to break the front element its highly likely that there's hidden internal damage which could make repairing it impossible.

In 40 years I have never dropped a camera. It hangs securely around my neck or its on my tripod or its in my camera bag. I've worn out several neck straps over the years but they are cheaper to replace than a camera or lens.

Start saving for a new lens and always, always, always use the neck strap.
