Getting a new camera? - 1

I have a nikon d3100… I have 2. Long story. I only have a kit lens the 18-55 and a 50.
If youre answering the question you already know about crop factor and what not.

I got these a year ago and now i'm ready to move up. I plan on building an arsenal of lenses
but before I do that I need to know what direction I'm going in.

I know nikon. So far I like their stuff. So I was gonna stick with it.
It was between the d7100 and the d610
full frame or no? I know I want a full frame camera.
and since the prices are so close should I go ahead and go full?

" I know I want a full frame camera" Well there you go then - sounds like you've answered your own question.

Do you know WHY you want a full frame camera though? Is it because it sounds good or you think you'll get better pictures? Do you think your photography will 'improve'? Are you not happy with your image quality?

If the answer to the above is 'YES', then that's not a reason to upgrade If you are getting poor images with your current setup, then buying a 'better' camera will not get you better images. You get better by learning not by spending.

What is it that's missing from your current setup that you think you need? Will you get that with a more expensive camera body? Identify that, and you will have a enuine reason to upgrade.

It sounds to me that you are a gear head with no real idea of why you are buying this stuff. You want an 'arsenal' of lenses? Why? With the right gear you could get away with 3 possibly 4.

Before I buy new equipment I ask myself the question, "What is it that I want to do that my current equipment won't do?" I suggest you do the same. I have had the same DSLR since November 2008. While I can see the advantages of the D7100 and the full frame D610, there isn't anything that I want to do that my D90 won't do. Your D3100 is a very capable camera. Are you getting the most out of it?

Invest your money in quality lenses and photography lessons. Since you are thinking going full frame (some day) buy only full frame lenses.

If they gave full frame bodies away for free, it would still cost you a bundle. Well, your FX 50mm lens isn't expensive, but when you go shopping for zoom lenses that will change.

The answers here are top quality… It's good advice they are putting your way.

I've been using cameras for over 40 years and i'm pretty impressed with the crop sensor cameras… I use a Nikon D5100 and love it… I bought a D7100 and wasn't too impressed… I then 'downgraded' to the D7000 and it's the best camera i've ever used… If I decided to go professional I would invest in full-frame… Honestly though the quality from crop sensor cameras is pretty impressive and I doubt i'll need to replace the kit i'm already using…

It's important to understand what it is you are looking for… And then choose your direction from there… I'm just about to upgrade my lens collection because I know exactly what I can squeeze out of my current kit… And the extra investment is worth it.

If you need to ask… You need to bury your head in some photography books or magazines… People would pay me to cover events and celebrations with my current kit… And i'm delighted with it.
