The 18-55mm VR & 55-200mm VR will cover most of your daily needs. And a 50mm 1.8 won't hurt.
He's right, but stick with the 18-55mm for now, until you gain confidence.
It depends on what you want to photograph.
For dramatic wide angle landscapes, you probably want a 10-20mm (Sigma do a good one).
For portraits & low light work, a 50mm f1.8 comes in handy (and/or the 85mm f1.8).
For sports/wildlife, something in the 300mm or 400mm range.
Otherwise, just use the 2 consumer lenses that commonly come with the camera - the 18-55m and the 55-200mm.
There are literally 100 lenses you can chose from, with prices between $120 and $20, 000. There are big ones, fat ones, small ones, and specialty lenses.
Can you narrow it down a bit?
If you are looking at lenses, make sure you buy AF-S lenses (if Nikon) or ensure the 3rd party lens has a in-lens focus motor. Otherwise your camera may not autofocus with a particular lens.
