You already have a CHEAP DSLR! Just keep your D3000!

The lowest price Canon DSLR is the Rebel T3 (aka EOS 1100D); Nikon's contender is the D3200.

But what can they do that your D3000 can't? Upgrading your camera body will NOT improve your photographs. Spend your money on some decent lenses instead.

You should buy a new lens instead of a new body. The D3000 is inexpensive and you're not going to find anything better for around $250. Keep the 3000.

Tell us what you like to shoot and we can recommend lenses for you.

Switching from Nikon to Canon is NOT an upgrade (nor would it be the other way around).

DSLRs are the pinnacle of photography tools, and the only reasons to buy another DSLR is for a few of the esoteric features. But that comes with experience (and therefore you would not be asking this question here).

Learn what you can on your D3000, and perhaps start investing in lenses as they are more important - and make more of a difference - than the body.

For example; not happy with your low light performance? Don't buy another body with better low-light performance until you have bought the fastest lenses available.

Repeat this 100 times: "It isn't the camera its the photographer."

Instead of obsessing over a new camera, spend time learning about Light, Composition, Exposure and Depth of Field.

If you're dissatisfied with the 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G zoom that came with your camera consider saving for the Nikkor AF-S 24-120mm f4G ED VR zoom. While not as wide as the 18mm end of what you have its certainly an upgrade. However, unless you've spent the time necessary to learn about what has already been suggested don't expect any improvement with the new lens.

Another concept in photography is called "seeing photographically" and is more esoteric and difficult to explain. I found this site that offers a good explanation:

Once you've equipped yourself with all this knowledge the next step is to begin actually thinking about Light, Composition, Exposure and Depth of Field BEFORE you release the shutter. Once you begin doing this you should begin seeing an improvement in your photography.

Learning about photography is a never-ending process.

You can get the t2i. Even though its not a new camera it still performs well and its about the same price as when you bought your d3000
