Dslr aperture ring won't adjust the aperture?

I have a nikon d80 with a tamron 28-80mm lens its a d lens because it has a aperture ring on it, but when i set it to aperture mode or manual mode or any mode i try to adjust the aperture using the ring but when i do i look at the display and instead of seeing the aperture changing it says F EE, i'm not sure what it means but it does not change. It only changes when i twist the lens to make it zoom then it goes from f3.5 to f5.6 then when i turn the dial it can go up to f22. My question is why does it not change when i turn the aperture ring? The ring is labeled with the numbers from f3.5-f5.6 but has no affect when i change it with the ring why is that?

Have you read the manual to it? I'm almost positive it will help you more than people that are not looking at the camera.

F EE sounds like the way camera makers code error messages that they don't really know what the problem is… Quick we have a 318QR on our hands…

it sounds like the lens and camera have a communication issue,

put the camera in manual mode, take some shots of the same thing moving only the apperture ring between shots, if you end up with the exposures getting darker or lighter then its just the tamron and nikon having problems communicating, try cleaning the lens contacts with a dry cotton bud,

if moving the ring is changing your exposures then at least thats something,

best i got for your issue

You really haven't read your user manual. Page 132.

You adjust the aperture using the control wheel on the camera.

You need to set the aperture ring to f/22 and lock it there for your camera to use the lens properly, the way you use your other Nikkor lenses.
