Dropped my Nikon D5100?

I recently dropped my d5100 and get the error message 'Error. Press shutter release button again.' it is still under warranty and you can't tell it has been dropped as there's no scratches etc, it is 4 months brand new. I know it is something to do with the mirror in the body as both of my lens are okay with my other camera. How much do you think nikon will charge if they figure out it has been accidental damage? Or do you think it will be free? Uk btw

Added (1). Btw i have been using the neck strap, it was on my side and i attatched my new lens and it fell of the side, i should of been more weary of where i was putting it down

While your find D5100 is still under warranty, warranties do NOT cover abuse or neglect by the owner.

Dropping a camera is NOT covered under the warranty.

When you get the camera repaired at your own cost, use the neck strap that Nikon included with your camera

Whether damage is accidental or done maliciously, the cost will be the same.

All you can do is call Nikon and ask for a RMA number and a quote to repair the damage

The repair certainly won't be free but using the provided neck strap is free and comes under the
category of "well duh". How smart do you have to be to figure out there's a reason for that strap.

This will cost you… Could be several hundred, I don't know. Call Nikon and then remember the neck strap.

You would NOT be the first person to try and slide something that is your fault through the warranty process.

Don't kid yourself… They will have a good idea what caused the issue. It's not the first time they had to repair a camera due to it being dropped.

The best thing to do is own up to your fault and request a repair estimate. It's called personal responsibility and it will make you a better person, and you will learn not to drop your camera.

I spent too many years in IT hearing "I didn't drop it"; "It just broke"; "It must be defective"… C'MON, I may be dumb, but I'm not blind or stupid.

Yes ma'am, the screen just broke on it's own. And the center of the damage matches the size of your ring.

I understand it just quit working. Why is there a tire mark on it? (ran over by a bus) and yes Virginia… Hard drives have shock indicators to let us know when they have been dropped.

Of course it's defective… As I turn over the laptop and wine pours out. Then I hear "I don't know how that got there".

And may more tales of "they will never know it was my fault" IT stories.
