Can you get fx lens on a dx body?

So i was reading up and i was going to get my nikon 24-70 2.8 for my d5000 and upgrade the body later because i was told by some people that you could use a fx lens on dx body. But when i went to a local camera shop the owner said that it would not work and that you have to have a fx body for fx lens. Anyone help with this?

The fellow who told you that you had to use a Nikon FX lens on an FX body doesn't know what he's talking about. That is one of the stong points Nikon is rightfully proud of - you can use a Nikon lens made in 1960 on your D5000 or full-frame D700 or D3.In fact, you can use your DX lenses on an FX body using the camera's crop mode - your images on the full-frame camera will be the same size as the ones on your D5000.
I suggest fiding a new camera shop.

Either the camera shop guy knows nothing about Nikons or you interpreted him in a wrong way, but that is not true. You can use FX lenses on DX cameras perfectly fine, with no differences or compromises except your focal length would be multiplied by 1.5, resulting in lenses appearing more telephoto. You can also use DX lenses on FX cameras, but you'll only be using a portion of the sensor.
