Can I use the lens from my Nikon D70 with another Camera?

I currently have the 2004 model Nikon D70 its old! And the screen is tiny!

As I'm traveling to LA next month I'm going to need a newer better quality camera. So I was wondering if (to save money) I can buy the camera body only for another camera such as the Nikon D5100 and use the 18-70mm lens that came with the D70?

I'm not much of a camera expert at all so I have no idea if this is a stupid question or not! Haha

The link shows the compatibility of Nikon cameras with the various lens types. A 2004 lens should be compatible with a new body.

Yes, the lens will fit and I believe the 18-70 was an AF-S lens so it should autofocus as well.
Any AF-S lens will autofocus on the D5100.
Older AF-D lenses will autofocus fine on the D70 but not on the D5100.

If you can afford the extra get a D7000 body instead. Anything which works on a D70 will work on a D7000. You will be AMAZED at the speed of the D7000!

That is actually a pretty good lens. I gave my D70 to my son a few years ago, and that is the lens it came with. The lens was pretty good ($450), and it is a better lens than the 18-55mm ($120) kit lens that you would get with the D5100.

The 18-70 has a metal mounting ring, and a lot heaver then the all-plastic 18-55mm kit lens.

Yea, buy the D5100 body and use that lens. And yes, it is an AF-S lens so it will autofocus on the D5100.
