The AF-S lenses have internal autofocus motors.

ALL AF-S lenses can be used in the auto-focus mode. This does not mean that you can't manually focus if you wish

All AF-S lens have built in focus motor n can do auto focus so you can use this lens with d5000

Can you use? Yes. Will it AF? Yes. Do you have to manually focus it? Only if you want to. Nice fast lens for that length. I assume it's for sports?
