Can I use a 50mm Nikon Ai-S 1:1.8 on a Nikon D60?

I have a Nikon 50mm Ai-S50 1:1.8 and when i attach this lens with my Nikon D60 it read that there's no lens attached. I can fire the shutter and it will take a picture, I just have to guess at the shutter speed and iso to compose the picture. I understand that the autofocus won't work. Will the D60's meter work with this lens? I'm not interested in buying a lens that will, I just want answer if this lens will work with the camera's meter so I don't have to guess and check on the shutter speed everytime i take a picture.

This lens will not work as you want it to on D60. The minimum requirement for it to work is a D200 or above model.

The D60 can't detect what the aperture ring of this lens is set to, so it can't take a meter reading.
A D200 or D300 can mechanically detect how many stops up it is turned from maximum aperture, so that enables those models to meter with these all-manual lenses.

It works. But in full manual only.

That lens will work in full manual mode (M) with no lightmeter. Just take lots of shots changing the settings each time to see which works. You can brute force your way into using it if you have no idea how to assess light with your eyes. It is highly possible to meter with your eyes and brain like the way we did way back when during the film era.
