I own a nikon D3000 and i ruined my 18-55mm lens i was just wondering if i would have to buy a specific lens for it. Or if i could just buy any lens.

In the first few pages of your instruction manual it says this Nikon camera requires the use of such & such "mount" Nikkor lenses. You need to replace the Nikkor 18-55mm lens with a Nikkor 18-55mm lens unless you want a different focal length. But by your question, indicates to me either you don't belong in a DSLR camera or you have not read your instruction manual. Which is ok for most little "point & shoot" cameras but not for your sophisticated Nikon D3000.

Any standard Nikkor lens would work

You can't buy any lens for the camera. It has to be Nikon specific. All modern Nikon lenses work on it, although they have to be AF-S lenses in order to autofocus. Also, almost all third party, like Tamron, lenses have lenses that will fit Nikon cameras, but you have to specify Nikon mount.

Here's the lenses that will mount, meter, and autofocus on your D3000.

Whatever you do, don't buy a lens designed for another brand camera and plan to get an adaptor.

Now, you can get older non-AF-S lenses that you can use for manual focus, but it's not really recommended unless you're very comfortable with manual settings.

Hope this helps.

No.

Buy Nikon. To preserve autofocus, get AF-S or AF-I. VR would be good too for sharp photos so to replace your lens, get an 18-55mm AF-S VR. You can get third-party branded lenses. Tokina would be the best followed by Sigma and Tamron. Just make sure the lens you get has an internal motor for autofocus.

Still it would be best to get Nikon. There are lots of very cheap and almost new kit lenses in the secondhand market due to people mistaking it for an inferior lens. Simply take advantage of the supply while it lasts.

If you are thinking of getting another lens, here's a lengthy discussion on how to look at them.

Here's where you can see the actual lenses on sale at the moment and how much will they set you back.
