Can 28-200mm Sigma lens to fit Nikon 35mm SLR cameras fit on nikon d90?

Recently i won a bid on this lens, pretty sure it can fit my D90 as i read CPU lens type D can be use with D90 on the user's manual.

But to double confirm it, i messaged the seller asking the compatibility, and he replied "The D90 is only an entry level camera & doesn't have an autofocus server in the body, so any lens you buy has to have an autofocus server in it otherwise they will only work on manual focus. The 28-200mm lens was designed for 35mm cameras & isn't compatible with most digital Nikons."

can somebody knowledgeable on photography out there re-confirm this matter. I'm about to cancel the buying as he stated that, and the after-bidding-end problem arise.

The seller is mistaken. The D90 is a prosumer grade body and it does have an autofocus motor in the body. Lenses like the 50mm/1.8D AF work perfectly on the D90.

That being said, the lens that you bid for is… Not exactly good. If you have a chance to cancel the deal on good terms with the seller, do it.

First, the seller was wrong about the D90 - it DOES have a focusing motor in the camera body.

If the lens you bought is an AF model then it will auto focus on your D90. If it isn't an AF model you can still use it on your D90 but with manual focus. Any Nikon F-mount lens ever made, with a couple of exceptions, can be used on your D90. Here is a complete listing:

The D90 has an AF motor. The Sigma you won would likely be closest to a Nikon AF lens. No problem. The lens will mount and AF on your camera. Take it.

By what you have described, the seller is probably wrong. The D90 is a mid range camera, and does have an AF motor built in. Therefore it is capable of driving a non-motorised lens.

If you remover the lens from your D90, and look into the mount, you'll find that there's this cross shaped thing which looks a bit like a screwdriver, it should be in the bottom left of the metal ring.http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond90/page6.asp scroll down and you'll see a clear picture of the motor linkage on the D90.

That's not the whole story- the 28-200 hyperzoom sigma made is a AF lens, but it does not work on my D600, but does work on the D80. It is "not guaranteed to work" on newer digital Nikons. What the differences are I do not know, but my 35-80 film nikkor does work on my D600, whereas I get a no lens indicator (fEE) on the D600 with the Sigma 28-200 Hyperzoom. Also they madse at least 2 types of these, one the distance indicator is closer to the front of the lens than the other. Mine is the "Aspherical IF" 28-200 that has the distance scale about 1.5" from the front of the lens, ser # 2009232. "Just sayin" - I've been shooting 40 years and this is all factual. Not all aftermarket lenses "talk" to the Nikon the same. The one that works AND the one that doesn't do work on different cameras; all these- cameras and lenses I speak of have the same slot for focus capability, and the same 5 electrical pins. It's a lens recognition issue on "some" cameras for the 28-200 Sigma, probably a computer chip not speaking to the camera the same (D600 vs D80)
