Camera safe in Rio de Janeiro?

Hi, I'm going to Rio de Janeiro (staying in Ipanema) next week. I have a pretty nice camera (Nikon D40 SLR) and am planning on using it a ton, so telling me to not take pictures isn't an option haha. Anyway, how should I carry it around that would lower the risk of having it stolen?
Also, any other safety tips you can give me?

So don't get scared but a friend of mine had their camera stolen straight out of their hand at 9:00 in the morning in Ipanema. It really is a beautiful place though. Just keep a lookout for people watching you and don't stay out too late. Basically stay in very popular areas ( with lots of clean looking people) and try not to look to tourist-y. You'll find the majority of people love Americans and are very hospitable!
