Camera lens focusing won't move?

Sara

I have a Nikon D40x with a 18-200mm lens. It only has the option to manually focus. I accidentally dropped it today and the focusing ring will not move at all. Please help, thanks.

Added (1). What exactly do you guys mean by rocking the camera?

Happened to my camera, too. Try zooming in and out slowly while gently rocking the camera back and forth. The zoom lens is probably just displaced, and it affects the focus. Sometimes it corrects itself by doing what I just wrote.

Pour oil…
or better go to the nearest nikon service center.pray that it still has warranty OR, buy a new lens…
if not, then oh no, its the end of the world!

Ouch! It sounds like the aluminum ring for focusing is now out-of-round. That's a repair problem as you'll need to take the lens in. Here's a list of Authorized Nikon Repair Centers for you.

I'm not clear on what you mean, "It only has the option to manually focus." A Nikon 18-200mm lens is an AF-S model, and should autofocus with your D40x perfectly, as long as the autofocus switch on the lens is set to "M/A". If you have an earlier Tamron 18-200mm, or Sigma 18-200mm, then that's a different matter, of course, as the older one's don't have the built-in AF motor.

In that case, you can take the lens to any camera repair shot for an inspection. Avoid Walmart or Best Buy, as they'll simply send it out the same repair shop you'd drive to, and make you wait longer.
