So i'm looking at either getting the Nikon D5000 or the Canon Rebel XSI but i havnt made up my mind yet. All i'm wondering is what accessories should i get for my camera? I'm also doing lots of long exposure photography so should i get a tri-pod?

I highly recommend the nikon d5000 since i have one myself. You WILL need a tripod for long exposure photography.

reason i say d5000 over the XSI is purely because nikon seem to have better experience in making consumer dslrs and therefore they seem to be better build quality and better value for money

however i suggest you take a visit to your local store and see if you can try one out… Everybody is different, you might find the canon to suit you better

If you want to do long exposures then a tripod is ESSENTIAL! There's almost know way to hold your camera 100% still throughout a 30 second exposure. I recommend spending a decent amount on agood tripod, a nice sturdy, but compact one. My first tripod cost $30 off ebay, but I had to buy another one within 2 months. I would suggest spending up to about $150 on a nice solid one, you will probably never have to replace it.

In terms of other accessories here are some semi-essential things

- A UV filter
- Camera bag
- Cleaning kit (air blower, microfiber cloth, lens pen)
- A polarizing filter
- Neutral density filters- you need these for long exposures in day light, as the block out light.

SO yeah, nothing is essential but it is all really useful

In terms of which camera to buy, I personally would prefer the Nikon d5000, but it is up to you. Keep in mind that the d5000 is quite old, have you looked at the d7000?

Well yes of course get a tri-pod. I bought a canon rebel xsi two lens kit from woodlandhillscamera.com great price great camera. Get your uv and polorizer the rest just keeps falling into place… The kit comes with two lenses camera bag strap etc sd card battery and charger be sure and buy a spare battery. Or the nikon they have those too at good prices. I think its cheaper than adorama check for sure.altho i never use my uv. Get your blower thing too to clean your camera altho it has incamera dust cleaning still get a blower.photographersedge.com has reasonable prices on blower. You might want a larger camera bag eventually… Keep adding up the money… It doesn't stop… Personally i hate digital cameras. Thats not all you will need you will find out what all you need…

If you will be doing long exposures with your camera, get a shutter release cable and a tripod, too.

Save yourself some money and get the Pentax K-x, should you get a tripod for long exposure? You NEED a tripod for long exposures, the chances are near 0 that you would get a perfect long exposure shot with hands only.
