Buying myself a DSLR! Advice?

I would like to buy myself a dslr camera soonish with some Christmas money and some savings money. Under 1000 definitely for the whole kit!
I have been into photography for about 5 years now, although I have only played around with a DSLR camera during a photography course once where I used a NIKON D40:)
what do you suggest?
Added (1). I need it to be a camera that is very capable and will grow with me. So I don't spend all my university savings haha

If you liked the D40, try a Nikon D3100.It's a decent camera and it fits your budget.

Nikon D40 is a great camera, but a little bit dated. The Nikon D3100 is a great option, as well as the Nikon D5000 and D5100. They all come with a camera body, standard 18-55mm lens, strap, battery, batter charger, usb cords, and your standard warranty and software. Canon T3 is a very nice entry-level DSLR. 12 megapixels is more than enough to get you started. Although if I were you I would bump up to the next best thing. A Canon T2i or T3i. You might find yourself outgrowing the T3 very quickly, and the T2i and T3i have a few more features that will satisfy you more as a first DSLR. All are under $1000 for the kit and with the extra money you can go and buy yourself a nice bag and a few accessories like a UV filter or a lens blower. Hope I could help you! Merry Christmas.
