Nikon SLR Cameras

Buying first digital-SLR, which model?

After failing at any decent form of photography for the last 4 years with a point-and-shoot, I've decided to put money towards an SLR. A little 'starter kit' would be good for now, so I can get the hang of it before getting any fancy lenses. Something that includes a body and a lens. I adore macro shots. I do not want the Nikon D3000, because for some reason I know 9, 000 people with that camera. I'm looking for something a tad bit better, but I still want to keep it under 800 dollars. Any tips? Mostly interested in wildlife photography, if that helps at all.

Added (1). The Rebel T2i is considerable. Which would you go with out of the following?

Canon Rebel T2i ( http://www.walmart.com/...A/13969250 )
Nikon D3100 ( http://www.walmart.com/...t/15222286 )
Nikon D5000 ( http://www.walmart.com/...m/11714571 or http://www.walmart.com/...r/11714570 )

There's the Nikon D3100 that is much better than the D3000. Also consider the Canon Rebel T2i.

Most kit lenses have decent macro capability, but will be limiting for wildlife shots. You will need to spend a few hundred more dollars to get a telephoto lens or a lens with a larger zoom range.

You're not going to find anything better than the Nikon D3000 for less than $800. For a starter camera, you'd do better looking for something like a Nikon D200. I've used one for news photography and love it, even though it's several generations old.

It works very well for nature photography. You'll just need to buy yourself a close-up lens for bugs and flowers (<18mm lens) and a sizable zoom lens (>300mm) for further away shots of larger animals. Lenses for all SLRs are pretty pricey, but they're arguably the most important part of the camera.

I have several cameras including a D300, D90 and a D3000, and to tell you the truth my 3000 is the work horse of them all. It is always the one I pick up when I have no specific shooting plans.
