I'm currently using my friends nikon D40 but I want my own soon. I don't know which one to get. I have about $1, 400 saved and I'm looking for a smallish camera that's easy to use.

I'd recommend that you get either the D3100 or Rebel T3 - These two will leave you with about a 1000 bucks or so to buy a nice lens (or two), some spare batteries, a weatherproof camera bag and some memory cards.

Get the EOS Rebel T3, I'm a Photographer as well, excellent camera. Here's the link to the website: http://shop.usa.canon.com/..._275685_-1

If you are used to shooting with a Nikon system, the D3100 may be just the right camera for you.

It has a special feature on the camera just for beginning photographers called the Guide Mode.

That camera will cost you about $650. With the balance of your saved money, you can look at buying a second lens.

I'd recommend you get the Canon T2i and invest the rest of your money in some really good lenses, afterall they matter more. The camera is pretty easy to use, you can learn it by going through the manual several times. I have one and it has surely never disappointed me. It would be a great investment. Read this detailed review comparing it with other models to help you make a decision:

This the best price you can get for it with the kit lens:

And you can look for other models mentioned in the review here:

Canon and Nikon make the finest cameras, stick to them. Best of luck.

If I were you I would get the D3100 (you say you want something small). How do you mean easy to use? You have a D40, it doesn't get easier than that. Plus, it's not complicated at all if you read the manual and practice.

D3100 is around $600, you could also go with the D5100, and spend the rest on lenses.

I purchased Canon EOS Rebel T3 this camera a few days ago and I've had nothing but FUN with it! Aside from my simple Kodak Easyshare point and shoot, I had a Canon EOS Elan 7 (35mm) and had been wanting to switch it over to Digital for several years. The longer I waited, the better the camera's got and more affordable they became.
