Best portrait lens for Nikon D5100?

I want to do portrait photography, both head shots and full body shots. I can't decide between the 50mm 1.8 lens and the 35mm 1.8 lens given the D5100's crop factor. What do you think?

Well, when using your 18-55, what focal length do you usually have it set to?

If you tend to use it towards 1) 30-40mm or 2) 45-55mm? If 1, get the 35, if 2 get a 50.

Be sure to buy the 50 1.8 AF-S - the older AF model will not autofocus with your 5100.

The 50 would be better. 35mm is too wide for portraits. It'll introduce distortion.

I personally haven't used either, instead I have the 40mm f/2.8, however most people I know use the 50mm f/1.8 and it's a fantastic portrait lens from what I've seen of theirs. I know one person who uses the 35mm f/1.8 and it's a great lens too, but most people I know have the 50mm.So, that would have to be my vote!

I prefer an 85mm lens for headshots (I use the Sigma 85mm 1.4) and nothing less then a 50mm for full body shots on DX.

The 50mm f/1.8G. The 50mm focal is considered to be the best focal for any type of work, especially for portrait. It gives you a normal view with no zoom. It's easier to frame your pictures this way. I take 90% of my shots with my 50mm, which cost me only 140$.
