Best nikon DSLR camera?

I have my eye on the D40X but i'm not sure, can anyone with experience please suggest me a nice camera?

The first question that comes to my mind is budget or rather what you are willing to spend on a dSLR.

Since the D40x is an old entry level, I believe you are just starting out so I suggest to you finding a newer entry level model. It doesn't have to be the D3100 which is the newest (even though you get a lot of bang for your buck.)

Look for a used D80. Some might not choose this two generation old model now but lets look at the facts;

The D80 has all of the automatic features that most entry levels have now.

The D80 has the built in focus motor so all Nikon lenses can be used including the old film lenses which can be purchased used for a great deal.

The D80 can be bought used for a very reasonable price.\

The D80 is CLS compatible with the built in flash able to be used as a commander.

The next up model you could get is the D90 which runs around $600+ used.

These are probably the best of the budget level because they allow for the wide lens assortment at an early stage so you can upgrade with ease in the future if so desired.

so here are some option,
nikon d3100
nikon d5000
and nikon d7000 a

nikon d7000 is the best in it's category costs arround 1000$ and also features auto-focus motor where are nikon d3100 is cheapest best camera you can get does not have an auto-focus motor. Basic functionality remains the same. Both are capable of video recording.

fyi: never buy and older model because newer model always has better image reproduction

The N camera someone else owns. Canon cameras are better than nice they are great.
