It is pretty much trial and error. You can look at youtube for videos on how to fine tune focus your camera - there are several tutorials there.

What I did was to take a metal yardstick and put it on a tripod at an angle using a tripod clamp. Then I made a metal target that I also attached to the tripod.

Then you have to get the camera absolutely parallel on both the X and Y planes to the target. Then when you focus on the target, the ruler will show you where the forward and rear cut-off of the DoF is.

I also used a software called "digiCam Control". You can google it - it is a free thethering software that you can use real time. I hooked my laptop up to my camera and it allowed me to see the photo as I adjusted the lens fine tune.

I found with my D7100 I only had to fine tune my f/1.8 and f/1.4 primes as they have shallow DoF when used in-close. They were not off buy much, well within manufacturing tolerances. But it is nice to have the ability to fine tune them with the D7000/D7100 for a perfect focus.

I have not had the need to fine tune any other lenses. What I'm saying is be careful with fine tuning. Use it only when necessary.
