Any ideas on a good video camera?

I'm a senior in high school, and I only have 9 months of college before I apply to some junior level film schools. I need a good camera though to start short films this summer for some type of portfolio. I was thinking about the Nikon D5000 or D1300 but. I'm not sure if those will be that great. Are there any other cameras around that price range that are better?

Don't forget that either of these cameras will require an expensive video editor, put that in your budget as well.
