Looking to upgrade my camera, any ideas?

I'm looking to upgrade my nikon D40x that i bought back in 2009. I would like to go pro, rather than entry-level, but of course i have a budget of $700 so i don't think that would be possible (however, i'm open to buying used/refurbished).

The only problem i'm having right now is that i would want it to autofocus on my nikkor 50mm f/1.8D lens, and a lot of the ones i've been looking at aren't compatible. However, that's not deal breaker or anything, i could always get a new 50mm lens. I have my eye on the D3200, the only thing is the sensor is a bit smaller than my current nikon. What do you guys think?

The D3200 is one of the best entry level dSLR's made at this time.

The sensor on it is the same as your old D40x. Both use APS-C sensors and the one on the D3200 is one of the best in that size range at this time. The differences you quote when you say the sensor is smaller is in 0.1 mm measurements. Do you know how small that is. Negligible.

I recently upgraded from d3000 to d5100 and I'm just blown away by the capabilities of this camera! Even in just "automatic" the camera does fantastically, not to mention shooting in manual! I've only had the camera since June (it was my grad present!) so I'm no where near experienced enough with it. However, just from what I can do now, I'm more than happy. Lenses are easy to find, as well as lens add-ons, and they're relatively inexpensive. I was hesitant to upgrade because I loved my d3000 so much, it truly is a very well-rounded and capable camera.
