I was just curious if i'm on the right track to be doing photography.
-i am currently enrolled in Photography 1 at school
-i am in Photography Club at my school
-next semester i will be in Advanced Photography
-i am doing a family portrait/individual portraits for my uncles family
-i am shooting for my friends sisters baby shower.

so do you think i may have a chance in the photography world?
i also have a DSLR (nikon d3000) and saving up for more lenses

The fact that you are educating yourself in photography says a lot. I'm assuming that by "school" you mean high school and my main objection to high school and non art school college photography is that they are there to encourage you, not to give you the strict critiquing that you will need to survive if you go into photography as a career. I would recommend that you join a camera club outside of your school that offers competitions with knowledgeable judging. You will be more likely to receive the sort of critiquing that will encourage the right type of growth. Looking for a club that is part of the PSA is better.

I'm disturbed by the absence of

"I love taking photographs"
"I can't think of anything else"

That is the one must to make it in anything in life. I don't mean to be harsh but no one can teach you passion.

You have a chance. Perhaps more so than all the teen girls who "just love photography". You at least are doing something constructive about it.

How good you are remains to be seen of course Could be you still shoot full auto and haven't had any really critique yet

You can't judge anything because you are taking family or friends photos. There are plenty of clueless people using equally clueless "photographers" to take photos for them. I'm NOT saying you are in that category, just that someone wanting you to take pictures for them is no measure of whether or not you are on "the right track"

How are you doing with your class assignments? Are you learning to use the camera in all modes other than the automatic modes? Do you understand what you need to do with the camera and lighting to get a photo like you want, rather than just pushing the button and having to accept whatever the camera does? Those kinds of things may be more oriented to the Advanced class, but I would think you would at least be touching on them now.

Also, a major factor that lets you know how you are progressing is to look back on photos you took a year or two earlier and absolutely cringe in horror at how awful they are! Lol… That is the real test to show if you are improving in both technique and your knowledge level of what good photography really is.

Sure. I'm very proud that you are focusing on an education. That is the one thing that will make you an amazing professional photographer some day. Too many people just buy stuff and wonder why their photos are bad.

I'm also glad you are practicing. But I'll warn you to not get ahead of yourself. Don't try to "start a photography business" too soon.

Keep learning. Study and ponder. Don't just take he class and let it slip away in a week. I don't want to see you here later asking "that thing I learned in class ya know that thing?' I'm gonna shake your had in 5 years when I see you shooting Elvis downtown. Don't disappoint me!
