Advice for travelling overseas with cameras?
I'm going on a 2 month trip to Canada, New York and Europe and have a Nikon D90 DSLR and a Panasonic HD Camcorder. I fully intended to take both with me as I want to take top quality photos and make a movie of our travels. Most people I have spoken to have advised against taking my DSLR as it's too big and it will be too cumbersome to travel with as well as the camcorder. The thing is, I don't see the point of owning it if I don't use it for an opportunity like this. I would like to hear any advice from seasoned travellers that take cameras with them, primarily storage suggestions and easy ways to take them between places. I would tend to take one out at a time maybe so I don't have to worry about switching between the two at the same time. Any advice and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers buds.
Few tips, get a bag big enough to carry both, take a four plug extension lead and one European adapter to charge your camera batteries you can charge both cameras at once. Make sure you take the SD card out of both camera's so if the camera's are stolen then you still have a copy of the pictures you have taken. Get adequate travel insurance.
I avoid buying big cameras for this reason. There are few situations where the camera is more important than the photographer for taking good photos.
Having said that, I often miss a feature or two from a decent camera… But not so much that I would lug one around.
They also make you stand out as a tourist (if I walk around my local area with a camera they think I'm a tourist, no matter what I dress in.)
Anyway, my personal idocyncrasities aside, here is the answer to your questions.
1. Pop into your local camera shop and look at different camera bags. Many professional photographers have a backpack with padded compartments for cameras, lenses, stands etc. Find the right bag for the job.
2. I'm not sure how big your HD camcorder is, but you really want to take something that can fit in your pocket when you go out for dinner or other do other things where you don't want a camera.
3. Don't worry too much about anything else. You bought it to use it. So take it and take photos.
Enjoy your journey.
