My Nikon D5000 has a quiet mode.

Some have mirror lockup available - you'd have to ask.

DSLRs still have a mechanical shutter and mirror, so there's only so much you can do. Raising the mirror as was said will help, but it will not help the shutter noise.

But some manufacturers add noise to make the camera sound like a camera, and to provide some audible feedback that the camera is doing something. For those cameras, you can usually shut that noise off.

Film cameras (that's what SLR cameras are) are never quiet. There's not only the mechanical shutter but there's the film advance plus the shutter. All of those make noise.

If you're talking DSLR cameras, as in digital, then there's still the mechanical mirror movement that always makes noise - there's no quiet mode.

The metal focal plane shutter itself is actually reasonably quiet, it's just a click. The problem with DSLR cameras is the mirror slap, since the D3100 and 1100D both have small sensors, the mirror slap isn't the worst. The D3100 has certain limitations which do give it a few disadvantages, the 1100D however isn't much better either.

For absolute silence, you need a device called a sound blimp, an expensive and stupid cumbersome device which surrounds a camera.

If you want real quietness, spend £75-100 on an old TLR with no moving mirror and a leaf shutter.
