Most of my colleagues either shoot with Nikon or Canon cameras

How do you choose? You have to go into the buying experience knowing what you need and then after careful consideration and a number of trips to a proper camera shop, pick the camera that best suites your needs.

Of my five closest colleagues (we seem to show up to almost the same events, two of them use Canon systems and the other three Nikon's. You do not see any pros using Sony or Pentax, mainly that has to do with the lack of lenses in those other two brands.

Only you can determine if a specific Nikon is worth buying. If you base your purchase on good independent research and NOT public opinion, you will pick the right camera for you

Yes they are very good. They and canon cameras are the best out there

Nikon dSLR cameras are worth buying. Nikon point-and-shoot aren't. Nikon hybrids or CSC's, I don't know yet.
