Do camera lens work with any SLR camera?
I have a Sony Alpha A200 SLR and am looking for lens' to buy. I've found a Nikon lens but I'm not sure if it would work with the camera I have. Can anyone let me know?
Probably not.
Each manufacturer makes its own proprietary SLR mounts, and they are usually not compatible. Since Sony was originally Minolta, a Minolta lens MIGHT work. A Nikon lens would probably not work.
Also, there are some independent lens manufacturers who make camera lenses that are manufactured with Sony mounts.
No
Each camera system uses their own lenses.
There are some generic lenses made for different dSLR systems, but for the most part, you will want to buy Sony or A-mount Minolta lenses
Nikkor lenses are made specifically Nikon cameras
I use a Sony A200 and have an old Canon SLR… And no, they don't fit each other… The lenses have a completely different fit…
you can get adapters for some different makes, but they aren't 100% and you could end up ruining the lens or camera…
you could always try FREE LENSING… Though that takes some practice and a LOT of patience… (and only if the lens is a prime lens)
All camera manufacturers use a proprietary lens mount and there's no compatibility between different brands. So don't buy a Nikon lens for your Sony DSLR.
Instead, if you're looking for a reasonably priced lens for your A200 look for Minolta Maxxum AF lenses on eBay. Your A200 uses the Minolta Maxxum "A" lens mount introduced on the Minolta Maxxum AF 7000 35mm film camera in 1985. The "A" mount was used on the later Konica-Minolta 5D and 7D DSLR cameras and when Sony bought the DSLR technology and manufacturing in 2006 Sony kept that lens mount.
One of the best zoom lenses Minolta made for the Maxxum cameras was the 70-210mm f4 zoom known as the "Beercan". I've seen this lens listed on Ebay by reputable sellers for $200.00 and less.
You can buy a Minolta Maxxum AF 50mm f1.4 prime at B&H for about $224.00. The Sony-branded version is about $370.00 - and its the same lens.http://www.bhphotovideo.com
So if you're bargain-hunting for lenses for your A200 look no further than the legacy Minolta Maxxum AF lenses.
"Lens" is singular.
"Lenses" is plural.
Each system camera will have an associated lens mount, any lens of that lens mount will work, with a few exceptions. Additionally it is sometimes possible to adapt lenses from other mounts, with a few complication.
Your Sony a200 uses the same lens mount as Minolta AF (Maxxum/Dynax/Alpha) cameras, most of these Minolta lenses will fit straight on and work fully, with a few exceptions. Additionally, M42 screw mount lenses can be adapted and function as manual only lenses.
Nikon lenses won't adapt properly, neither will any other lenses. I shan't elaborate further as this is all the info you need.
No. Each brand has their own propriety mount. Sony dSLR's can only use lenses with the a-mount (Alpha). That includes lenses from Zeiss, Sony, Minolta and third-party brands like Tokina, Sigma and Tamron. Make sure you get one with an a-mount.
Depends on the Nikon lens, if it has an aperture ring then you can use it on your Sony with an adapter.
You will lose auto focus, but it will manually focus and meter correctly, as your Sony camera can't alter the aperture you can't use any auto modes except Aperture Priority, and Manual Mode of course.
You set the aperture on the lens, hence the need for an aperture ring, older Nikon lenses will work newer ones without an aperture ring won't except with a wide open aperture.
As Nikon has the longest lens mount to sensor distance of any DSLR, you can't use any other manufacturers lenses on a Nikon as they can't focus infinity, but you can use Nikon lenses on any other make of DSLR, with an adapter, with the above proviso's.
To be honest don't bother, the problem with the Sony/Minolta mount is that there are not many cheap lenses available unlike Pentax where 30 year old+ lenses will work as designed and are very good optically, will be image stabilised as it's built into the camera and available for a song.
