This year for a christmas/birthday combination present I'm planning to get a digital SLR camera. However I'm not sure what would be the best option for me to get seeing as though this will be my first professional camera. I've tried to do some research but I'm so torn, I mean there are so many great options from both Nikon and Canon. I need help picking out what camera I should get, and which brand is better? Your opinions are greatly appreciated!

Actually "better" doesn't come into it. Both brands are known as the best in the world. Neither is better than the other. Oh yes, they have different features of course but if you've been shooting a
point and shoot don't look for all those cheesy modes because they're not there.

I'm a Canon guy who likes my gear. Anything in the Rebel line will be an excellent choice. What it depends on is your budget. They run from about $550 to $950.

I know what you mean!

I'm a huge fan of the Nikon D5000, which i'm getting for a christmas/birthday combination! It's great for beginners.
The settings are very visual for things like aperture and shutter speed (VERY helpful for beginners!)

It's kind of hard to explain, but I'd suggest you watch cameralab's review. It's fantastic.

Have you checked out the Nikon D3100? Its a great entry-level DSLR.Th photo quality is terrific and videos are excellent. It has a fine body and very reliable. Both Nikon and Canon make the best DSLRs, it particularly depends on personal choice. Has a 14.1MP CMOS sensor and shoots full 1080p HD videos. Its very easy to use and you can learn alot more about photography. SUrely a great investment. Read this user review to help you in making your decision:

Nor Canon, nor Nikon is the best. Why? Because all DSLRs have the same image quality, colors, sharpness etc. It just depends on how you use it, because pros and amateurs use both, which means none is better.

Canon EOS T2i, T3i, Nikon D3100, D5100 and Pentax K-r are the best for below $800.
