The Nikon P100 is considered a "bridge" camera. Basically it is a point and shoot with a massive zoom mounted on it.
by SLR I think you mean DSLR (SLR is film, so obvious difference there). DSLR cameras have much larger sensors, at least around 15x bigger than a point and shoot or bridge camera. They have better technology built in, and all come with manual modes.
any current DSLR will do better than the p100 by far if it is used correctly, because that is what they were built to do.
DSLR cameras have interchangable lenses, so based on what you want to shoot, you have to have the right lens for it.
Well, an SLR camera uses film, a DSLR doesn't (hence the name).
