Thinking of buying a professional camera and I can't wrap my head around how expensive Canon is compared to Nikon. Why? Obviously new and improved cameras will be more with better features, but is it really worth $3,000 to $7,000 dollars? The Nikon D5500 hovers around $500 while the Canon EOS 5D Mark iii is $2,500. Aren't those cameras the same other than different features and lenses? I'm frustrated please help. Cheers.

Of the professional level APS-C sensored cameras made by Nikon and Canon, the Nikon D500 out performs the Canon 7D, Mark II. See link below

The Canon 5D, Mark III is positioned across the Nikon D810

The other pro version of a full frame Nikon and Canon are the Nikon D5 and Canon 1Dx

All you can do is visit the Nikon and Canon websites, visit DP Review and read the professional reviews on all those cameras. This will help you figure out those differences You are comparing a Chevy Vega to a Cadillac. Those cameras are not the same in terms of sensor sized & capabilities.

Entry level Canon are the t3i and t5i. These are comparable to the entry Nikon D5500. The D5500 is a step up from entry level camera with an APS-C sized sensor (sensor is 1.5X smaller). The 5D is a full frame camera. Compare the 5D against Nikon's D810, D750, D610, or D5. Yes, you are correct. They are all basically the same and yes, you'll get the same shot, more or less no matter what dSLR you use.

It only gets frustrating if you can't afford $2,500, $3,000, or $7,000 for a dSLR. How much more for the $45,000 kind but that's not our worry right now (Hasselblad, cough, cough…)? You simply buy the most expensive that fits your budget. Remember, it's only worth it if you can truly afford it so no, never ever compare a D5500 to a 5D or something like that again. A Mercedes and a Volkswagen are the same, other than different features and parts quality. The Pentax K-50 is equivalent to the Nikon D5500, or Canon EOS 760D, but a better camera on paper.

The Pentax K-1 (£1200 body only) competes directly with the Nikon D810 and Canon EOS-5D series.

The first thing you should do is compare like with like.
