I have used Canon photography products for the last 20 years - its Canon all the way.

I really don't see a point in going with a film camera in this day and age. Just because some teenage girls pretends its trendy doesn't overpower the simple and numerous advantages digital cameras have to offer.

I would also go with the Canon. The same would be true in the digital market zone as, without going through a list of reasons, Canon have the most logical user interface. Also, I believe that Canon were considered better as film cameras, than Nikon, by the older generations who knew everything there was to know about them.

Well i'm not a canonite meself, if you ask me i'll recommend the Nikon one…

Infact to take it further i would recommend u the Nikon FM10…

I own it and personally love it. But then again i also own a Nikon D90. There's also some point in what 'Tech' said… If you don't own a DSLR already, u shud seriously reconsider owning a filmcamera… See the thing is its infact the 21st century none's got the time or moneys to put film, then print film then scan them and put them into your computer… Even professionals of 30yrs are fast shifting to DSLRs over SLRs for that reason…

Depends on personal preference & budget.

The main difference is that the Canon A-1 takes FD lenses. They r pretty cheap 2 buy.
The Nikon FE uses Nikon's F mount. It can use most Nikon lenses so u'd have more options w/ it. But you will prolly pay more 4 them cuz Nikon's modern cams all use the same mount too.

you get some different modes w/ the A-1 too… Shutter & aperture priority among others. The FE has manual exposure & 60-40 center-weighted.

If you still can't decide between the 2 flip a coin.

Neither. Get the Olympus OM2, it's just as capable (if not more), and much less expensive, I've seen (and almost bought) a black top (a rarer version than the silvertops) for £35 with a 50/1.8.OM lenses are really common and cheap to buy, and generally good quality. Plus they can be adapted to Canon, and Olympus DSLRs.

Canon A-1 is known for problems with it's cloth shutter, and the FD mount is essentially obselete. Nikon is built better, but the lenses get expensive now people have picked up on the fact they can use their old lenses on their new DSLRs.

I personally own a Canon A-1. I don't have any experience with the Nikon FE.

Both are good cameras, but I would recommend the Canon. Nikon F-mount lenses are still usable on today's digital bodies (admittedly without autofocus, but they still work). This means the old lenses still carry a reasonably high price tag as they are still in demand. Meanwhile in the late 80s, Canon introduced a new lens mount for their autofocus cameras (film and digital) which was incompatible with the old manual focus lenses and cameras. This means there's less demand for the older Canon FD-mount manual focus lenses, and they are cheaper online.

Depends.

Do you already own a nikon digital SLR? If so, I would get the Nikon. The reason is that you would save money in the long run by being able to use the same lenses on your FE as on your digital SLR.

(You can't do that with the Canon.)

I don't think either is necessarily better. It depends on how good of a photographer you are.
