Canon 17-40mm focus hunting and noise issue?

My Canon 17-40mm L lens is having a horrible time of focus hunting and often not finding or missing focus entirely. The noise also seems way off and not quiet like USM usually is. I'm using a Canon 5D mark II and all the other lenses I have tried work just fine. There's plenty of light and contrast for the camera to focus on. Has anyone had this problem and is there a way to fix it?

Thanks for your help! You need to have Canon repair the lens. This is very typical problem which occurs when a lens has had hundreds of thousands of auto-focus cycles.

We had a Nikkor 70-200 mm f/2.8 do the same thing after close to 600,000 auto-focus cycles. I think it cost about $400 to have Nikon do the repair. When compared to the cost of a replacement lens, it was a bargain and we should get the same amount of use from the lens. It was a $2,000 lens purchased in 2010 and used by four of our photographers who shoot mostly sports. A Hi so it needs to checked out by a cannon engineer. It is certainly nothing you are going to repair yourself. Send it to Canon. I took it to my local camera repair store and they said that the auto focus motor needs to be replaced which will be about $250 for the part + labor
