Cannons take better pictures but the body wears out quickly. You have to replace the shutter quite often.(if you do it professionally) On the other hand Nikon's last longer but the image doesn't seem to be as sharp. I prefer Nikon's. That's what'd I'd choose and get a few basic lenses and you'd be set!

PS my favorite lens is the macro

Cannons shoot projectiles.
Nikon make cameras. Canon also make cameras.

What price range are you looking at?
If you are after a DSLR, it really doesn't make much odd which brand you choose.
If it is a compact, go for Canon, Panasonic or Sony.
If you are looking at bridge cameras, go for Fujifilm.

For best quality go for a DSLR. The best choice for you will depend a lot on your budget.

If you only know two manufacturers - and can't even spell one of them - you're nowhere near ready for a camera.

For same class, Nikon give you sharper image, better noise reduction, better colour, but more expensive than Canon.

Canon (one "n") and Nikon both make excellent DSLR systems that will take you far. The one that suits you is the one that fits your hands, your style, and your budget best. I'm a Nikon shooter and have been for decades, but Canon cameras are equally excellent.

I'd suggest going to a camera shop (not Walmart) and handling models of each brand that are within your price range. A good place to start would be the Canon T3i and the Nikon D3100. Of course, there's models above each Canon and Nikon, if your wallet and needs call for that.

Here's a great site where you can read unbiased, detailed reviews of virtually any digital camera on the market.

Which is best? Well, when my brothers and I get together, two of us shoot Nikon, one shoots Sony, and two others shoot Canon. You should see the arguments when we compare camerabag contents! Make your own informed choice. BTW, many sales people get perks for pushing one brand over another, to take their information as an informed opinion.

If you are looking for an inexpensive compact camera - go with Canon. They make the best cheap cameras.

If you want a performance compact - then either Nikon or Canon are about equal.

If you want the best DSLRs, then Nikon is the better choice.

Canon has The D60na to shot stars with its very expensive and rare and nikon has the D3100 which is very consumer friendly. Both brands do good but. Pears to apples here! Sure but those are dslr, i bet you want a point and shoot so go with the Fujifilm HS25 or 30 they offer good pictures and hd video and best of all a forced flash and that my friend will make a difference with pictures in semi dark places where most cameras fail big time.

(Wow like how half the people turn into English teachers when one thing is spelled wrong)

But I personally prefer a Nikon, I have use both Canon and Nikon and I feel like Nikon's are just simple and easy to get the hang of. If you are looking for taking Video i would recommend a canon, but if you are looking for better picture quality go with the Nikon (from my experience Canon takes better video)

I would go down to best buy or something and look at the cameras and play with them and ask questions to the guys in the camera department.

But that's how I feel, it really just comes down to what you're use to and what feels more comfortable using.
