Both are good brands of cameras, but I think Canon is the best.

Personally, I think Nikon cameras are better. I have one and it's lasted 3 years so far and it's still perfect!

In the realm of digital SLRs, both Canon and Nikon cameras have their merits and flaws, but overall, they're solid cameras. Personally, I prefer Canon, but I'm used to them.

I'd suggest going to your local box store (Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart) and doing a side-by-side comparison. Buy the camera that is the most intuitive for you, with menus and functions that make sense. The last thing you need is to get frustrated with your new camera.

For what it's worth, I work for a local newspaper and we have two Canon Rebels that we use. The only problems we've run into is that, at over 1000 photos a week, the shutter buttons tend to wear out after a few years.

Get whatever floats your boat. It's all personal preference. Neither brand is really better than the other. You can't go wrong with either one anyhow, seeing as how they're the top dogs in the consumer camera market. Try some cameras out from both brands at a nearby camera/electronic store and see which one is more comfortable for you to use.
