Can I have some camera advice on a lens?
I have a Nikon D7100 & the lens I have is 55-200 mm. Unless I'm shooting something a mile away, it is a bit impractical.
What is a good lens to buy that will allow me to shoot close ranges?
The dual lens kit often sold with such cameras is the 55-200mm and the 18-55mm.
While not the best lens in the world, an 18-55mm is cheap enough to get away with, and adequate for your needs.
A zoom lens like the 55-200mm is not only for shooting objects that are "a mile away" but also for shooting up-close photos of relatively close subjects that you can't get physically closer to. Shooting nearby wildlife would be an example, or shooting discrete candid portraits of people without having to get in their face. A smaller lens such as an 18-55mm is better suited to wide-angle landscapes rather than close-ups.
Sounds like you bought the D7100 body and the lens separately, as the usual kit includes a semi-wide to tele lens such as the 18-55mm or 18-140mm.
I know of no affordable lens that can get good close up shots of anything a mile away, not even 1000 feet away.
The Nikkor 800 mm f/5.6 costs over $16,500 and there are very few people who actually own such a lens. Most of us rent lenses like that.
There's the new Nikkor 200-500 mm zoom lens that "only" costs $1,400, but probably still outside your budget
The Nikkor 55-300 mm might be an okay compromise and at $400 a relative "steal"

The one that came with your camera, originally, the 18-55mm kit lens.
